Publication of personal data

A distinction is made between legal and natural persons. The data of legal persons can be viewed via DENIC's information systems (whois, RDAP, Domain INFO), complete with name, address, telephone number and e-mail. The personal data of natural persons is only disclosed on request to persons with a legitimate interest (domain owners or third parties with valid and verified evidence from DENIC, not final) and is not publicly accessible. Thus, both the GDPR and the NIS 2 requirements are met.

  • Domain owners with ORG domains are classified as legal entities.
  • Domain owners with domains of the type PERSON are categorized as natural persons.

NOTICE

The domain owners should receive an annual message by email with their ownership data, indicating whether this will be published.

Published information for domains with legal entities

For domains of the type ORG, the following information is published via the information systems:

  • Registrar data (optional, with the member's consent; member and registrar names do not have to be identical)

NOTICE

It is important that members inform domain holders that DENIC will publish all legal entity data via the information systems.

For newly registered domains and existing domains of the PERSON and ORG types, care must be taken to ensure that the correct type is transmitted to DENIC.

NOTICE

The only exceptions to this are queries from the domain owners themselves and queries from authorized third parties, who also receive the complete name and address record.

Published information for domains with legal and natural persons

In addition, whois indicates that at least one of the domain holders is a natural person and that, for data protection reasons, the data for these persons cannot be published. Even for domains with multiple holders, the data of natural persons can be requested by the domain holder or authorized third parties.
